On January 16, 2022, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office responded to 6770 Mausap Road in Eightmile, Alabama, about one deceased female and 2 males suffering from a lacerations. The deceased female was identified as Helen Nettles Washam DOB: 09/02/1960. There were two other people injured in the home,an uncle, George Washington Nettles, DOB: 12/11/1969, bedridden with Cerebral palsy, had severe lacerations to his face and the second victim, Desmon Washam, the son of the deceased, received lacerations to his wrist.
The suspect was identified as Damien Winslow Washam, DOB 04/07/1998, another son of the deceased. Damien used a sword to assault victims listed above. Damien fled the scene before Deputies arrived in a dark green 2000 Honda Accord. MCSO Deputies located the vehicle and attempted to stop Damien but he refused and continued traveling towards highway 158. Saraland Police were notified and they deployed spike strips which ended the pursuit. Damien’s vehicle was stopped on Highway 158 near mile marker 6. The sword used to kill his mother and injure his uncle and brother was found in the front seat of the vehicle.
Damien tried to flee on foot but was tased by a MCSO Deputy. He was transported to a local hospital for his injuries, none of which are life threatening. Warrants will be signed for his arrest and upon his release will be booked in the Mobile County Metro Jail for Murder, Attempt Murder, Assault 2nd and Attempt to Elude.
The brother, Desmon Washam, was treated at the scene for his injuries and the uncle, George Nettles is in a local hospital in critical condition.
