SHERIFF’S CHAPLAIN

KIND OF WORK: The Chaplain is the spiritual leader of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and is ordained to serve in meeting the spiritual, secular and personal counseling needs of the organization’s members and their immediate families.

In this capacity, the Chaplain may be called upon to hold religious services and memorials, perform ceremonies, provide counseling, present educational offerings, and to give eulogies, invocations, benedictions, and other public presentations as may be deemed appropriate. The Sheriff’s Chaplain also covers the Mobile Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (F.B.I.), performing the hereafter mentioned functions.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Holds religious services; holds memorial services, performs wedding ceremonies, makes death notifications to next of kin of employees and families of victims; performs funerals for Deputies, organizational personnel and their families; performs funerals for the families of victims; offers prayers at special occasions (e.g., recruit graduations, award ceremonies, banquets, retirement ceremonies, dedication of buildings, etc.); visits the sick and injured members of the Sheriff’s Office in home and hospital; counsels Sheriff’s Deputies and non-sworn members of the Sheriff’s Office; counsels victim’s families concerning their physical, financial and emotional needs because of their tragic incident and provides temporary comfort and guidance until permanent counseling can be established; assists at homicides, suicides, death by fire, death by drowning, and natural deaths and other critical incidents when needed at the request of the deputies on the scene; serves on Civic Boards, serves on review boards, awards panels and other committees at the request of the Sheriff; teaches classes, seminars and workshops on such topics as Stress Management, Ethics, Family Life and Family Values, when requested by the Training Division. Networks with Churches, Faith based organizations and Civic Organizations to get help for people in need. The Sheriff's Chaplain serves as liaison and with other clergy in the community also provides Critical Incident Stress Management debriefings when necessary for the County of Mobile as well as other counties when approved by the Sheriff.
