Over the years, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office has seen its structure
ripped apart by fires and storms. From the early days of a small staff of
deputies to today's staff of over 500, the Sheriff's Office has grown into a
massive operation demanding more space and better crime-fighting tools.
The two-story Sheriff's Administration building, located at 510 South Royal
Street, offers room for future expansion and a prime location near the Metro
Jail. To aid in the Sheriff's crime fighting efforts, the County has a 325-bed
Minimum Security Barracks designed to enhance law enforcement in Mobile County
and facilitate the Sheriff’s goal of making sure that prisoners are put to work
earning their keep. Each year thousands of inmates provide free labor-saving
taxpayers millions of dollars.
The Mobile County Sheriff's Office is the second largest Sheriff’s Office in
the state, providing law enforcement services to 400,000 citizens of Mobile
County who live within 1,200 square miles.
Whether behind the walls of our jails or in the cab of a patrol car, the Mobile
County Sheriff's Office is constantly updating the technology used by its
members each day in a relentless effort to fight crime.
The latest venture by the Mobile County Sheriff's Office is the use of Crime
Mapping in an effort tagged as COMSTAT – a concept described as Smart Policing.
Crime Analysts constantly track crime as they occur so that commanders in the
field know where to allocate resources. This technology provides an opportunity
to see trends as they develop and target high crime areas known as Hot Spots
with specialized units that can easily move in and squash flare ups as they are
identified.
The Sheriff Office is divided into three Divisions (Administrative Services,
Field Operations and Support Services). These three Divisions are headed up by
a Staff Member answering directly to the Sheriff.
